Bed Bug Control: What You Should Know

March 1, 2014  ·  New River Pest Control, LLC

About Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are small, flat, reddish-brown insects approximately 3/8 inch long. They are smart, elusive, hardy, and methodical. They do not discriminate. Bed bugs can be found in hotels, hospitals, apartment complexes, single-family homes, college dorm rooms, offices, vehicles, and virtually anywhere humans spend time.

  • Female bed bugs can lay 1-5 eggs per day in cracks and crevices of mattresses, box springs, couches, nightstands, and even picture frames.
  • Bed bug development time is approximately 21 days, passing through 5 nymphal stages.
  • The average bed bug lifespan is 6-12 months, feeding approximately every 10 days.
  • Bed bugs are capable of going dormant for several months when no host is available.

Signs of an Infestation

Evidence of bed bug activity is often identified during a thorough inspection. Look for dark specks or smears on mattress seams, box spring edges, and nearby furniture. These dark smears are fecal matter. Bed bugs feed on blood and excrete near their nesting sites. Eggs and juvenile bed bugs are quite small but are still visible to the naked eye under close inspection.

Our Treatment Approach

Because infestation levels vary significantly from property to property, rates are determined by severity, number of rooms, number of beds and pieces of furniture, and the size of the structure. Service length can range from one hour to two days depending on the scope of treatment.

We utilize a variety of treatment methods including steam, liquid insecticides, dust applications, and mechanical recommendations. All bed bug treatments include at least 1-2 follow-up inspections.

Important: Eradication is a joint effort. Clients are required to complete pre- and post-treatment preparations. If important follow-up recommendations are not followed, re-introduction or re-infestation can occur.
